Maternity & Newborn
Maternity and newborn photography
Calm sessions worked around the baby, at home or in the studio.

In short
Maternity sessions are usually shot between 28 and 34 weeks, and newborn sessions in the first two weeks while a baby still curls and sleeps deeply. Flying Pixel Studio shoots both at home or in a studio, unhurried and paced around feeding and settling, and delivers edited images rather than a raw gallery to sort through.
Maternity and newborn sessions are the two shoots with real deadlines attached, and both are easy to leave slightly too late. This page covers when each one should happen, what safety actually means for a newborn shoot, and what you get back.
When to book a maternity shoot
Between twenty-eight and thirty-four weeks is the window that works for most people. Before twenty-eight the bump is often not showing enough to be the subject of the photograph, and after thirty-four weeks standing for a session becomes genuinely uncomfortable for many.
Thirty-two weeks is a common sweet spot: the bump is unmistakable, energy levels are usually still reasonable, and there is a buffer before anything arrives early. If you are carrying twins, move everything earlier by about four weeks, because twin pregnancies show sooner and get uncomfortable sooner.
Thirty-four weeks is not too late, but it is the edge. Past thirty-six weeks we shoot shorter sessions closer to home, with more sitting and more breaks, and we accept that the session may need to move at short notice.
Twenty-eight to thirty-four weeks
The standard window. Bump clearly showing, energy still workable.
Thirty-two weeks is ideal
Unmistakable bump, reasonable stamina, buffer before an early arrival.
Four weeks earlier for twins
Twin pregnancies show sooner and get uncomfortable sooner.
Past thirty-six weeks
Still possible, shorter and closer to home, with the session able to move at short notice.
How a maternity session actually runs
Slowly. That is the main design decision. A maternity session is scheduled for two to three hours to shoot what would take an hour, because the extra time is spent sitting, drinking water and not rushing anyone who is thirty-two weeks pregnant.
Most sessions are shot at home or on location in soft natural light rather than in a studio with heavy lighting. Home works particularly well because the person being photographed is comfortable, the light through a large window is flattering, and the images end up looking like your life rather than a set.
Partners and older children are included where you want them, and it usually improves the session. A toddler in the frame changes the whole feel from a portrait into a family record, and it also gives everyone something to do other than think about the camera.
Two to three hours
Scheduled long deliberately, so nothing is rushed and there is time to sit.
Home or location
Soft natural light in a familiar space, rather than a studio setup that takes time to move through.
Partner and siblings welcome
Including them changes a portrait into a family record and relaxes everyone.
Two or three outfits
One flowing, one fitted, one you would actually wear. More than three eats the session.
Breaks built in
Water, sitting and pauses are part of the plan rather than an interruption to it.

When to do a newborn shoot
The first two weeks, and ideally days five to twelve. That window exists for one reason: newborns in the first fortnight still curl into the positions they held in the womb and sleep deeply enough to be moved gently between them. After about three weeks, both of those things stop being true.
This is why newborn sessions are booked during pregnancy rather than after the birth, usually around the thirtieth week, with the date left provisional. You call us when the baby arrives and we schedule inside the window.
Past three weeks a newborn session is still worth doing, it is just a different session. The baby is more awake, less curled and more alert, which produces lovely eyes-open images and almost none of the classic curled poses. That is a fair trade, but it should be an informed one.
Days five to twelve
The window where newborns still curl and sleep deeply enough to be posed gently.
Book during pregnancy
Around thirty weeks, with a provisional date. You call when the baby arrives.
Two to three weeks
Still workable, with fewer curled poses and more awake frames.
Past a month
A genuinely different session: alert, eyes open, fewer classic newborn positions.
Newborn safety, and what it means in practice
Newborn photography involves handling a days-old baby, and the safety practices are not optional. Every composite pose you have seen online, where a baby appears to be balanced in a hammock or resting its head on its own hands, is made from multiple frames with a parent's hands supporting the baby in each one, then merged in editing.
A photographer who attempts those poses unsupported is doing something genuinely unsafe. We shoot every supported pose with a parent or assistant physically holding the baby in frame, and remove the hands afterwards. If a photographer cannot explain how they achieve a pose, that is the question to keep asking.
The room is kept warm, around twenty-six to twenty-eight degrees, because newborns cannot regulate temperature and a cold baby will not settle. Sessions are paced entirely around feeding and settling, which is why a newborn session takes three to four hours to produce forty minutes of photography.
Composites, always
Every balanced or supported-looking pose is shot with hands in frame and merged afterwards.
A hand on the baby at all times
Parent or assistant supporting in every frame of a supported pose, without exception.
Warm room
Twenty-six to twenty-eight degrees. A cold newborn does not settle and the session goes nowhere.
Paced around the baby
Three to four hours booked to produce roughly forty minutes of actual shooting.
Nothing forced
If the baby does not want a pose, it does not happen. There is no pose worth distressing a newborn for.

Baby shower and milestone sessions
A baby shower or godh bharai is covered like a small function: candid coverage of the room, the rituals where there are any, and a set of portraits with the family. It usually runs two to three hours and the approach is closer to event coverage than to a portrait session.
Milestone sessions at three, six, nine and twelve months are worth knowing about because each one captures something the previous cannot. Three months is the first real smile, six is sitting up, nine is crawling and reaching, twelve is standing and often walking.
Families who book a package of sessions across the first year end up with a genuine record of it rather than a single shoot at an arbitrary moment. It also means the baby knows the photographer by the fourth session, which makes the twelve-month shoot considerably easier than it would otherwise be.
Baby shower
Two to three hours, covered as a small function with candid coverage plus family portraits.
Three months
First real smiles and much better head control than a newborn session.
Six months
Sitting up unsupported, which changes what is possible entirely.
Nine months
Crawling, reaching and personality, usually the most energetic session of the year.
Twelve months
Standing, sometimes walking, and often paired with a cake smash.
What you receive
Maternity and newborn sessions deliver a smaller, more finished set than event work. Expect forty to eighty edited images from a maternity session and thirty to sixty from a newborn session, each individually retouched rather than batch processed.
Newborn editing takes longer than the count suggests. Composite poses are merged frame by frame, and newborn skin genuinely needs gentle work: the blotchy patches, dry flaking and scratches that every newborn has are softened rather than removed, because the aim is your baby looking well rather than your baby looking like a doll.
Turnaround is two to three weeks. A preview of five to ten images goes out within a few days, because the grandparents are asking and three weeks is a long time to wait when a baby is a fortnight old.
Maternity
Forty to eighty edited images, individually corrected.
Newborn
Thirty to sixty edited images, including merged composite poses.
Gentle retouching
Newborn skin softened rather than erased. The aim is well, not plastic.
Fast preview
Five to ten images within a few days, because everyone is asking immediately.
Print-ready files
High resolution at the sizes a lab needs, plus web versions for sharing.

At home or in a studio
Home suits maternity sessions and most newborn sessions. The light through a large window is soft and flattering, everyone is comfortable, and nobody has to transport a two-week-old baby across a city to a scheduled appointment.
A studio suits families who want a clean neutral background, who live somewhere with genuinely poor natural light, or who want the specific look that controlled lighting produces. It also has heating, props and backdrops already set up, which shortens a newborn session.
The honest answer is that home wins more often than families expect. The most common regret we hear about studio newborn sessions is that the images could have been taken anywhere, and the most common comment about home sessions is that they look like that particular fortnight of that particular family's life.
Home: comfort
Nobody travels, everyone is relaxed, and the baby stays in a familiar environment.
Home: window light
One large window produces better maternity and newborn light than most studio setups.
Studio: control
Consistent light regardless of weather, plus heating, props and backdrops ready.
Studio: clean look
Neutral backgrounds for families who want the images to be about the people and nothing else.

FAQ
Maternity & Newborn: questions couples actually ask
If your question is not here, ask it in the enquiry form and a surveyor will answer it.
When should I do a maternity photoshoot?
Between twenty-eight and thirty-four weeks, with thirty-two as the sweet spot. Before twenty-eight the bump often is not showing enough to be the subject, and after thirty-four standing for a session becomes uncomfortable for many people. If you are carrying twins, move the whole window about four weeks earlier.
Is 32 weeks too late for maternity photos?
No, thirty-two weeks is close to ideal. The bump is unmistakable, energy levels are usually still workable, and there is a buffer before an early arrival. Thirty-four is the practical edge, and past thirty-six we shoot shorter sessions closer to home with more sitting and more breaks.
Which month of pregnancy is best for a maternity shoot?
The seventh to eighth month, which is roughly twenty-eight to thirty-four weeks. The eighth month specifically tends to produce the best combination of visible bump and reasonable stamina. Earlier than the seventh and the bump often reads as ambiguous in photographs rather than as the subject.
When should newborn photography be done?
Days five to twelve after birth. That window exists because newborns in the first fortnight still curl into womb positions and sleep deeply enough to be moved gently between poses. Both of those stop being true at around three weeks, which changes what the session can produce.
Is 2 weeks old too late for newborn pictures?
Two weeks is right at the edge of the classic window and still works. Past three weeks it becomes a different session: the baby is more awake and less curled, so you get lovely eyes-open images and almost none of the curled poses. That is a fair trade as long as you are choosing it knowingly.
Is a newborn photoshoot safe?
It is when it is done properly, and the key thing to understand is that every balanced or supported-looking pose you have seen is a composite. The baby is physically held by a parent or assistant in every frame and the hands are removed in editing. A photographer attempting those poses unsupported is doing something genuinely unsafe.
How do you keep the baby comfortable during a newborn session?
The room is kept at twenty-six to twenty-eight degrees, because newborns cannot regulate temperature and a cold baby will not settle. The session is paced entirely around feeding and settling rather than a schedule, which is why three to four hours are booked to produce around forty minutes of photography.
Can I take my own maternity or newborn photos?
You can, and phone cameras are good enough now that many people do. What a session adds is soft controlled light, someone else directing so you are not also operating the camera, and safe handling for newborn poses. If you are shooting your own, use a large window, turn off the overhead lights, and keep it simple.
How much does a maternity photoshoot cost?
It varies with session length, whether it is at home or in a studio, whether a partner and older children are included, and what you want back. Home sessions in your own city are the most straightforward. Send us your due date and your city and you will have a figure within one business day.
Are husbands usually in maternity photos?
Often, and it is entirely your choice. Roughly half of the sessions we shoot include a partner and many include older children. Including them changes the feel from a portrait into a family record, and it usually relaxes everyone because there is someone to interact with rather than just a camera.
How many photos do we get from a maternity session?
Forty to eighty edited images, individually corrected rather than batch processed. The number is deliberately lower and the finish higher than event work. You also receive a small preview set within a few days, plus print-ready files at the sizes a lab needs.
How many photos from a newborn session?
Thirty to sixty edited images, which includes the composite poses merged frame by frame. Newborn editing takes longer than the count suggests, because merging composites and gently working newborn skin is slow. Turnaround is two to three weeks with a preview of five to ten images within a few days.
Do you retouch newborn skin?
Gently. Every newborn has blotchy patches, dry flaking skin and often a scratch or two, and these are softened rather than erased. The aim is your baby looking well rather than your baby looking like a doll. Permanent features such as birthmarks are left alone unless you specifically ask.
Should we shoot at home or in a studio?
Home suits most maternity and newborn sessions. The light through a large window is soft and flattering, nobody has to travel with a two-week-old, and the images look like your life. A studio suits families who want a clean neutral background, have genuinely poor natural light, or want the controlled-lighting look.
What should I wear for a maternity shoot?
Bring two or three options: something flowing, something fitted that shows the bump shape, and something you would actually wear day to day. Solid colours work better than busy prints. If you want the classic flowing-fabric look, we can advise on what photographs well, and many studios keep a few pieces for this.
Can you photograph a baby shower or godh bharai?
Yes, covered like a small function: candid coverage of the room, any rituals, and a set of family portraits. It usually runs two to three hours. The approach is closer to event coverage than to a portrait session, and it is normally shot around thirty to thirty-four weeks.
What are milestone sessions and are they worth it?
Sessions at three, six, nine and twelve months, each capturing something the previous one could not: first smiles, sitting up, crawling, then standing. Families who book across the first year get a real record of it rather than one shoot at an arbitrary moment, and the baby knows the photographer by the fourth session.
What if the baby arrives early or late?
The date is provisional by design, which is why newborn sessions are booked during pregnancy with a window rather than a fixed appointment. You call us when the baby arrives and we schedule inside the first fortnight. Early arrivals are accommodated, and a late arrival simply moves the window.
Can siblings be in the newborn photos?
Yes, and it is worth planning. Sibling frames are shot first while the older child is still interested, which is usually the first twenty minutes, then they can leave. Asking a three-year-old to be patient for three hours does not work, and trying is how a session goes wrong.
How quickly do we get the images?
Two to three weeks for the full edited set, with a preview of five to ten images within a few days. The preview matters more here than for most work, because grandparents are asking immediately and three weeks is a long time to wait when a baby is a fortnight old.
